Environmental and geophysical fluid flow, St Anthony Falls Laboratory

The College of Science and Engineering (CSE), University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, invites applications for a faculty position affiliated with the St. Anthony Falls Laboratory (SAFL), a shared facility of CSE. The position could be in any of the following CSE Departments: Civil, Environmental, and Geo- Engineering (CEGE), Earth Sciences (ESci), or Mechanical Engineering (ME). The appointment will likely be at Assistant Professor level but exceptional candidates at the Associate or Full Professor levels will be considered. SAFL research integrates experimental work at laboratory and field scales with advanced theoretical and computational methods to solve a broad spectrum of real-world problems related to fluid dynamics. We currently host 15 faculty, a staff of 24, about 60 graduate students and researchers, and numerous visitors from around the nation and world.

We are open to applications from highly motivated individuals in a broad range of fields that involve fluid flow and take advantage of the unique facilities offered by SAFL. Potential areas include, but are not limited to: physical, biological, and/or chemical fluid dynamics; atmospheric transport and processes; complex fluids and fluid interfaces; sediment and Earth and planetary surface dynamics; fluid energy sources such as wind, waves, and tides; unmanned airborne, floating, and underwater sensing networks; mesoscale processes in environmental systems; turbulence; novel underwater propulsion and manipulation; and fluid-related “big data” analysis and machine learning. The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to a diverse research and teaching community in both SAFL and their home department through the development of a vigorous, internationally recognized, and externally funded research program; teaching courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels; and service in the department, college, and university.

In addition to its experimental and computational facilities, SAFL hosts the Eolos Wind Energy Research Consortium and Field Station and has strong connections to major centers across the University including: the Institute on the Environment (IonE), the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications (IMA), the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP), the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS), and the National Lacustrine Core Facility (LacCore).
